January 23, 2016: Teach Me To Teach Them!

Daily Berry Patch Devotions in 2016 - Day 23

Devotional Song:  … GO TO THIS LINK …  Please take the time to take in a video of Phillips, Craig, and Dean singing their song … I Want To Be Jesus Like You, expressing the desire of God for us as parents … for us to model Christlikeness for our kiddos.

Highlight Passage:   Proverbs 22: 6 [NKJV] …
6. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. … Great - and Godly - advice for parents.
Highlight Context – Proverbs 22:1-16 [NKJV] … USE THIS LINK  …
… Many of the Proverbs were written from the standpoint of a father teaching his child.

Reference Passage #1 … Deuteronomy 6:4-7 [NKJV] … USE THIS LINK
… God’s desire that we, as parents and shepherds of the children He gives us, teach those kids in the ways of the Lord.

Reference Passage #2 … Proverb 3: 1-12 [NKJV] … USE THIS LINK
… God’s guidance for the young in the Proverbs of Solomon.

Reference Passage #3 … Luke 9: 23 [NKJV] …
23 Then He (Jesus) said to theme all [His followers], “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. … “
… We follow Christ, as parents, and in doing so, we do all we can to lead our kids to follow Him.

My Journal for Today:  Today’s Our Daily Bread author, Jennifer Benson Schuldt, was teaching for parents today about letting life shape the minds of those young ones (see attached photo). And as one might expect author, Schuldt, taught from the book of Proverbs, which was given to believers as a guidebook for teaching wisdom to our kids.

If you’re a parent, or a grandpa like me, you’d probably agree that life itself becomes one of God’s greatest teaching methods for shaping the minds of our kiddos. And you may be able to remember some of those “teachable moments” which helped your kids, as Phillips, Craig, and Dean sing above, to become more like you, … which prayerfully was allowing them to become more like Christ.

And it’s tough, isn’t it? Many times we’d like to lecture our kids; but allowing them to make mistakes and learn the outcomes of those life lessons is really one of God’s best ways to teach His children. It’s probably how you learned the ways of the Lord the best, isn’t it? … And that is really what God teaches in His word (see Deut. 6: 7 and Prov. 22:6), to help us be good, Godly, parents. So, … being the loving parent, modeled by our loving God, that’s what we do as stewards of those young lives, whom God gives us to shepherd.

We guide them; and we watch over them. We lead them, as the Good Shepherd would lead His sheep; and we patch up the boo-boos when life brings those painful moments; and we do all we can to model our Lord into the lives of our kids. And when we do so, Prov. 22:6 teaches us that the outcome will likely be a child which follows the ways of God, denying self and following Christ (see Luke 9: 23).

My Prayer Today:  Heavenly Father, … Oh how I want our kids and grandkids to follow Your ways; so help me to follow You and lead them. Amen
