July 10, 2013 … Walking In The Anointing

Daily Berry Patch Devotions in 2013 - Day 191

Passage of the Day #1: 1st Samuel 16: 13 [David had God’s anointing power on him. ] [NLT]
13 So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the olive oil he had brought and poured it on David’s head. And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him from that day on. …

Reference Passage of the Day #1: Isaiah 61: 1-2 [Isaiah prophesies the anointing on the coming Messiah] …
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, because the LORD has appointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to announce that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. 2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the LORD’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.

Reference Passage of the Day #2: Luke 4: 18-19 [700+ years later Jesus declares the anointing on Him as Messiah ] …
17 The scroll containing the messages of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him, and He unrolled the scroll to the place where it says: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the downtrodden will be freed from their oppressors, 19and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” 20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. Everyone in the synagogue stared at him intently. 21 Then He said, “This Scripture has come true today before your very eyes!”

Reference Passage of the Day #3: Acts 1: 8 [We’re all to walk in God’s anointing. ] …
8 “... But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about Me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Devotional Song: Go to this link -  … Today, please use this link to again hear Marty Goetz singing, “The Spirit of the Lord Is Upon Me!” where the story of Isaiah’s prophesy of the Messiah is sung about with the challenge for all us to come under this anointing.

My Journal for Today: Os Hillman poses an interesting personal inventory in his devotional entry for today. He asks: ” Has the Spirit of the Lord rested on your life? Can you cite the time [or times] when God's Spirit has exhibited His power through you?”

Today, Hillman cites God’s anointing coming upon David as a young boy by the Prophet Samuel, long before David would walk in this anointing as King of Israel. And we know that in his years as King, David never lost a battle. Oh, there were those times when David made selfish choices, walking away from his anointing as with Bathsheba. Yet, we know that David always had a heart for His relationship with God; and his anointing was restored when he repented of his sin, learning from it, and moving on to walk in God’s anointing once again.

I also was reminded, by another song by Mary Goetz (hear the song linked above), that all Christians can walk in the anointing of our Messiah; and I was also reminded by this song of the prophesy of Isaiah some 700+ years before Jesus would come, where Isaiah prophesied (see Isaiah 61, quoted above) of the anointing which would rest upon the coming Messiah. And then we know that Jesus was given the opportunity in a synagogue in his hometown to read from that very prophesy where He first declared that He was the anointed One in fulfillment of Isaiah’s wondrous prophesy [see the passage from Luke 4: 18-19].

Then above, I repeated a passage I quoted in my journal yesterday, when Jesus charged His disciples with the anointing which He, through His Spirit, places on all believers – i.e., the called in His Name – to receive His power and be His witnesses in the world. Yes, my fellow Christian, God’s anointing is on any Christian who’s willing to surrender to Christ’s Lordship and to receive the anointing power of God’s Spirit to walk as Christ’s light in an every darkening world.

So, I pray that we all can answer Hillman’s questions above with a definitive “YES,” … knowing when God’s anointing has been used in our lives to glorify God and to be Christ’s witnesses. So, let me pray that now …

My Prayer for Today … Lord, I pray that we are walking in Your anointing grace, empowered to shine Your light for all to see You in our daily choices. … Amen
